In times of trouble we all have our favorite saint to turn to for comfort. During hard times, whether it be emotional trouble, violence, hunger, illness, or any other source of times that are trying to your faith, there is no better saint to turn to that Saint Jude. He is the patron saint of lost causes.
Saint Jude has become one of the most beloved patron saints in Catholicism for a multitude of great reasons. Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital was named in his honor. It is, as you may know, the hospital that pinpoints its efforts on caring for children who are extremely sick. He personifies the inspiring concept of everlasting faith in the face of adversity.
It makes sense that Saint Jude’s patronage is lost causes because he was an integral part of something many people thought was just that. Saint Jude and his brother Saint James the Lesser were both Apostles of Christ. Saint Jude spread the word of Christ after his death, which some people thought was pointless (we know it was not at all). Jude and the other Apostles took up the significant task of traveling to spread the word of Christ. It was so hard to do because in many places they were not accepted or welcomed nicely.
Saint Jude traveled to places such as Persia and Armenia. He and Saint Bartholomew were the first to bring Christianity to Armenia. Saint Jude became the patron saint of lost causes because he never backed down in the face of extreme adversity.
Saint Jude’s great faith and fearless pursuit of his mission from Christ eventually led to his martyrdom. Traditions says that Saint Jude died around 65 AD along with the Saint Simon, and that they are buried in the same tomb. Sometime after his death Saint Jude and Saint Simon’s bodies were brought to Rome, and placed in a crypt at Saint Peter’s basilica. His place of rest is visited by countless devotees each year.
