Our celebration of the Immaculate Conception is not the conception of Jesus as many think. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception commemorates the conception of Mary in
the womb of her mother, St. Anne.
We currently celebrate Mary's birthday on September 8th so the Feast of the Immaculate Conception was officially declared on December 8, 1854 by Pope Pius IX. He declared that the Blessed Virgin Mary "in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin". For this reason original sin was not removed from her soul. Rather, it never existed. For Roman Catholic's the dogma of the Immaculate Conception given additional significance by the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes in 1858. At Lourdes a 14-year-old girl, Bernadette Soubirous, claimed that a beautiful woman appeared to her and said, "I am the Immaculate Conception". This hymn, Immaculate Mary, is beautiful and conjures up a beautiful image of Mary and the blessings we have received from Her.
